The announcement for the new marketplace is actually going on right now. Head on over to the Google Code YouTube Channel to watch the live broadcast. Google Apps, if you’re confused by the sheer number of ‘apps’-related terms used in conversation nowadays, are Google’s in-the-cloud business solutions. Today’s launch does not represent the launch of apps that you and I will be able to use with Gmail (but I doubt a consumer Marketplace is far away…) The Google Apps Marketplace is here to fill the gaps. Citing security concerns, the Marketplace will be full of extensions and apps that join enterprise services — and your data — together. To be honest, I don’t know the full extent of what we can expect to see on the Marketplace, but I’m sure we’ll review some apps when they appear! If you’re unable to watch the video, Mashable is live blogging the broadcast . To get you up to speed, here are some bullet points from the first half hour: It will cost developers $100 to join the Marketplace as a seller. 20% of revenue will go to Google (significant, because Apple takes 30%!) Lots of partners in the program, from launch: Aviary, Expensify and others OAuth is being utilized, to ensure secure interconnectivity between Google Apps and external services/data The site, when it’s officially launched, will be accessible here: http://www.google.com/enterprise/marketplace/ (by the time you read this story, the site might already be up!) Stories about Apple’s stranglehold of control over the iPhone App Store have been raging since its inception. However, without signing up to the developer program, it’s not easy to find out just what rights developers do and don’t have. This is due to the terms of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement; all iPhone developers have to agree to these terms in order to be eligible to submit their programs to the App Store. One of the terms states specifically that developers must abstain from making any public statements about the agreement without Apple’s prior written approval. Luckily for us, the Electronic Frontier Foundation has posted a copy of the agreement which includes commentary on specific sections that they chose to highlight. Apple watchers won’t find anything particularly surprising, but it certainly does represent a major shift in the rights that developers will have, with regard to the platforms they are developing for, going forward. The number of willing developers is far greater than the number of potentially lucrative platforms, thus putting the platform vendors firmly in the driver’s seat

The Fortune World’s Most Admired Companies list shows analysts still rank Apple as top dog - for the third year running. The annual Fortune ” World’s Most Admired Companies ” list has been released, and Apple has top billing for the third year in a row - significantly above rival Microsoft. According to Redmond Pie , reporting on the figures released in the March 22nd issue of Fortune Magazine, Apple has beaten Google to the top spot for the third year in the row, forcing the search and advertising giant famed for its innovative atmosphere down to second place. Online retailer Amazon makes an appearance in fifth place, sandwiched between non-technology companies - something which may make those it allegedly mistreated during Christmas shopping periods raise an eyebrow. Technology giant Microsoft finds itself in eleventh place, between Southwest Airlines and Coca-Cola - an impressive standing, but way below its smaller Cupertino-based competition despite the high-profile launch of the company’s latest operating system, Windows 7.
