With all the buzz about the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing I got to thinking, how powerful were the computers that “took us to the Moon?” It turns out, they were nothing short of amazing. If you’ve never had a nerdy bone in your body, feel free to skip this post. But, if you ever laid on your back under the stars and thought about Mercury, Gemini, Apollo or the Space Shuttle, read on and see if you’re as geek-struck as I was researching this. Comparing the Apollo Guidance Computer to an IBM PC XT My first thought was how did the Apollo computer compare to the iPhone? It turns out that’s a really tough comparison to make.

The Symbian Signed process is supposed to weed out malicious and otherwise unpleasant applications, but failed in the case of Sexy Space. The Symbian Foundation had egg on its face recently as the news broke that it had digitally signed a Trojan application – allowing it to be installed on mobile handsets without warning. As reported over on CNet , the Foundation admitted to digitally signing the Sexy Space Trojan horse application without fully checking its capabilities – a bit of a problem when you realise that the application has been expressly developed to create a mobile information gathering botnet. All applications installed on a handset running Symbian OS must be digitally signed in order to prevent malware and stop users installing pirated versions of popular apps: while tech-savvy users used to be able to sign their own applications via a developer certification, this has recently been made more difficult – and does not give full access to the inner workings of the ‘phone. Instead, developers are expected to submit their applications to the Symbian Foundation who – supposedly – vet the software and issue a digital signature. Once signed, the application can be installed on any Symbian handset without any warning messages being displayed beyond the usual “ Are you sure you wish to install… ” Chief security technologist at Symbian, Craig Heath, has stated that the company does “ try to filter out the bad eggs ” as part of the signing process, and readily admits to a failure of the system in the case of Sexy Space .

( click to Wild Things-size ) We didn’t want to wake you up, but we really want to tell you something … specifically, that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today officially announced the upcoming movie tie-in game, Where the Wild Things Are , for 360/PS3/Wii and DS. Landing on retailer shelves this October in-tandem with the film’s theater release, all we know about the game so far is that it’s an action/platformer. You might remember hearing about this game back in May when we told you more or less everything we’ve just heard officially today. We do have the one exciting screenshot you see above, but that’s not a lot, so we’ve embedded the movie trailer after the break for your enjoyment. If it can warm our icy hearts, it can warm anyone’s.

I really wish the folks behind open source, cross-platform audio editing utility Audacity would take the beta label off the Audacity 1.3 branch. It’s so much better than the last stable release, Audacity 1.2.6 it’s not even funny. But it’s still considered beta software because it’s still under construction and doesn’t come with complete documentation or translation into languages besides English. This week the team released Audacity 1.3.8 beta. Some of the new features include faster equalization and noise removal tools. There’s also a new “mixer board” view with per-track volume meters. And mute, solo, gain, and track height information is now saved when you save a project.
