Sony: PlayStation Eye can recognize faces — right now

Thursday, July 16th, 2009 1 views

Interacting with games without using a controller is apparently a really big deal. Microsoft’s got its ” Project Natal ” thing and Sony has its magic motion wand . Oh, wait. That’s technically a controller. That you hold . Fear not, as, during the Develop Conference going on right now in the UK, Sony has revealed that the existing PlayStation Eye camera can recognize you — well, specifically your face — and track your skeletal movement without getting all touchy-feely. SCEE says that it already has libraries available for developers who want to integrate the technology into their games. Develop magazine’s site quotes developer relations head, Kish Hirani, who divulged that the software was developed by SCEE R&D along with outside developers.

Facebook sez, "Don’t mind us, we’re just whoring out your photos"

But it’s OK. Really! See, according to Facebook it’s all part of the acceptable use policy you agreed to. No, I’m not kidding. That red box above contains an ad that was displayed to Peter Smith, who no doubt agrees that the woman in the image is hot — although he suspected she wasn’t single. You guessed it, that’s his wife - consultant Cheryl Smith . Is this not the same Facebook that just went back and retooled a TOS that users found objectionable ? Didn’t they just finish apologizing and kissing our butts over the crapstorm that ensued? Here’s what the Facebook settings page has to say: Facebook occasionally pairs advertisements with relevant social actions from a user’s friends to create Facebook Ads.

Red Faction: Guerrilla dated, specced for PC

Thursday, July 16th, 2009 2 views

THQ’s Red Faction: Guerrilla will finally see a PC release this September - in Europe first too! THQ has formally announced the release date and minimum and recommended specs for the PC version of physics-driven destructathon Red Faction: Guerrilla - revealing that those of us in Europe will get the game before the US. International customers (including Europe) will get the game on September 11th according to THQ, while those of you in the US will have to wait an extra few days - it won’t be in stores in America until September 15th. The reason for the short delay in America is apparently that THQ is still finalising some distribution details with partners in the US. The recommended specs for the PC version of the games, which has you running around on Mars and blowing up lots of buildings, include a 3.2GHz processor, 2GB RAM and a 256MB graphics card. If you can’t quite reach that then you can make do with the minimum requirements - a 2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM and a 128MB 3D card with Shader Model 3.0 support. We reviewed the console version of Red Faction: Guerrilla not long ago and thought it was quite a good game and very technically impressive, even if the gameplay wasn’t as innovative as the engine it ran on. Here’s hoping that the PC version will feature a few more bits of visual splendour to help tip the balance in it’s favour! What did you think to Red Faction: Guerrilla ? Let us know in the forums .
