Nikkei Biz Daily: Sony considering iPhone competitor

Saturday, June 27th, 2009 4 views

Sony is considering a gaming/phone hybrid device as a direct competitor to the iPhone, according to Nikkei Business Daily (Via Reuters ). Unless you’re new to the Sony Phone rumor mill, a gaming/phone hybrid has long since been rumored to be in development, but has been denied by the Japanese hardware manufacturer. Sony currently develops mobile devices with Swedish partner Ericsson. In early 2009, MobileToday sources claimed Sony Ericsson had pitched the idea of a PlayStation-branded phone to Sony Corp, but was denied the rights to use the trademark. The rumor went on to further claim Sony only plans to license a PlayStation phone if the company plans to make handsets independently from Ericsson. In May 2009, Sony Ericsson president Hideki Komiyama stated that his company was destined to “lose” if they did not adapt to the “new technology and new market environment” — presumably referring to Apple’s iPhone. According to the new rumor, Sony plans to set up a project team to develop the new device, which will combine functions of the PSP and Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones . A PSP phone? Just imagine how much that mythical beast would cost.

Blockbuster selling high-end PS3 bundles

Saturday, June 27th, 2009 0 views

We were sent a tip regarding a new PS3 bundle that Blockbuster was supposedly selling, so we headed on down to our local chain to snoop around. What we found was the above image showing off a PS3 bundle consisting of a 40gb console , Transformers: The Game , Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HDMI cable, and a 12-week rental card (which allows you to rent one movie each week), all for $359.99. What makes this such an odd story, however, is that this bundle isn’t offered at every Blockbuster store. We called another nearby chain and quizzed an employee on his store’s bundle. He said that particular store offered a 80gb console , with Transformers: The Game , Click Blu-ray, PS3 remote, HMDI cable, and a 12-week rental card, all for $499.99. So, it would seem that each store has a bit of leeway with its bundle package.

Password Masking: love it or leave it?

Saturday, June 27th, 2009 1 views

Password masking - the practice of replacing the characters a user types into password entry field with bullets - has been widespread on the web for a long time. Jakob Nielsen recently wrote a thought-provoking post suggesting masking is hurting more than it helps, and that it’s only being kept around out of habit. I’ll try to make the case for and against masking here, and let Download Squad readers weigh in on the subject. Down With Masking: Masking ruins the user experience. When users can’t see what they’re typing, they’re likely to make mistakes and second-guess themselves. Did I forget my password, or did I just make a typo?

BeejiveIM, now with Push, is the best iPhone chat client so far

Saturday, June 27th, 2009 43 views

I wrote the other day about the iPhone version of AIM, and how it takes advantage of push notifications in iPhone 3.0., but since then I’ve been testing a different chat client that really takes things to the next level: BeejiveIM . You might be put off by the $10 purchase price, but if you’re an avid IM fanatic, it will be worth every penny. BeejiveIM supports AIM, Google Chat, MSN, Yahoo!, Facebook and MySpace in a smart layout that makes it the most usable chat app I’ve tried on the iPhone yet. The key features that make BeejiveIM a killer app are its support for push notifications, its horizontal keyboard, and the elegant way it organizes open chats. Rather than forcing you to dig through submenus on your buddy list, BeejiveIM puts the buddy list on one screen, and a list of your open chats on another.
