Phil Schiller, VP of Product Marketing at Apple, has said that Jobs’ planned end-of-June return is still on. Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, has said that fruit messiah Steve Jobs will be back at work by the end of June after his extended period of leave due to ill health. Schiller said that the plan hasn’t changed and he added that although Jobs wasn’t on stage to remove the covers from the new MacBooks, Snow Leopard, iPhone OS 3.0 and the iPhone 3G S, he was ” very involved ” in their development all along. ” You could say that Steve has stayed on top of some of the key strategic things at Apple throughout [his period of absence ” said Schiller. Many have felt that an Apple without Steve Jobs wouldn’t be the same and even though Apple’s CEO has sat out the last few keynotes, we can’t help but feel that’s still very true. Apple’s initial explanation for not taking the stage was that there’s more to Apple than just Mr. Jobs, but we’re not convinced at the moment.

Bill Veghte, Microsoft’s top Windows business exec, has said that he doesn’t expect Windows 7 to boost the PC market massively. Bill Veghte, Microsoft’s top Windows Business Exec, has said that he doesn’t expect the Windows 7 release to significantly boost PC sales, despite all of the excitement surrounding Microsoft’s next OS. ” History would tell us that generally as you ship a Windows release into the market… the bump is very modest, ” said Veghte. ” You will see a little bit [of a bump], but it [will be] modest. ” Microsoft announced last week that Windows 7 would ship on October 22nd and, according to a leaked Best Buy memo , the software giant will begin offering free or cheap Windows 7 upgrades to customers buying a new PC after 26th June via the Windows 7 Upgrade Program. That doesn’t quite line up with Apple’s plans to offer a cheap upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard – if you’ve already got Leopard installed, it’ll cost just $29 to upgrade to the new version of the OS, due out in September.

A US-based web monitoring firm has declared that the millionth English word is Web 2.0. Dictionary makers cry foul. Global Language Monitor, a US-based web monitoring firm, has declared that the millionth English word is Web 2.0, a term used to describe the latest generation of web products and services. The firm searches the web for newly coined terms, and once a word or phrase has been used at least 25,000 times, it is recognised as a word. GLM said Web 2.0 beat competition from terms such as Jai ho, n00b and slumdog to earn its title, but traditional dictionary makers have cast doubt over the claim and the firm’s methodology. The Texas-based company makes its money by telling organisations how often they are mentioned in new media, such as the Internet, and also tracks trends for new words and expressions. Dictionary makers have much tighter criteria for recognising new words - they have to be used for a certain amount of time, for example. Lexicographers claim that the exact size of the English vocabulary is “impossible to quantify” but said if every technical term or specialist word was accepted then we’d already be well beyond one million words. If specialist slang is restricted, its suggested that there are only approximately 750,000 words in the English language
